Newport News ASEZ STAR Hosts Teacher Appreciation Lunch

To celebrate the hard work of dedicated educators, ASEZ STAR, a group of middle and high school student volunteers from the Church of God, hosted a teacher appreciation lunch on September 10, 2023. With over 60 attendees, including 11 cherished teachers, it was a gathering that left an indelible mark on everyone’s hearts.

Delicious Food and Interactive Fun

After enjoying a delicious lunch, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the Church of God and put their knowledge to the test with a game of “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?”

The highlight of the event was the poetic tributes offered by the students to their teachers, as well as the student choir’s soulful rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The musical journey continued with a mellophone performance, accompanied by a talented pianist.

A Cheer for Educators

The students then shouted a cheer for their teachers: “Students arise! Teachers, we’re here to say, thank you for lighting our way! Teaching us with knowledge bright, you make learning take its flight!” The resounding applause and cheers resonated with the spirit of appreciation that filled the room.

The conclusion of the event showed video messages from the students thanking their teachers. Armani, a sophomore at Indian River High School, expressed, “I want to give thanks to Ms. Jefferson for being the best teacher ever. You showed me so much love throughout my 8th grade year and you have been with me through my toughest times. You were there for me when I needed you and I’m just so thankful you were my teacher.”

Afterwards, the teachers thanked their students for inviting them and shared how the event made them feel. A’layah, a 5th grade teacher at Crestwood Intermediate School, said, “This event made me feel so special. I feel honored, I feel appreciated. It made me feel amazing. I’m so glad I could be here today.”

Courtney, a reading specialist from Pembroke Elementary, shared, “I felt welcomed as soon as I came through the door. On the video I saw one of my students, Luca. I’m excited to learn more about the organization and to know that people from all walks of life are represented and to see what God can do.”
