Honoring Senior Veterans: A Heartwarming Veterans Day Event

On November 9, 2025, in Hampton, Virginia, Church of God volunteers hosted a Veterans Day appreciation event at a local retirement home. The event brought together more than 30 volunteers to honor over 25 senior veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. To begin the event, volunteers provided free personal care services, including haircuts and manicures. Each veteran also received a gift bag designed to show genuine gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

The Veterans Day event focused on simple and respectful support for older veterans in long-term care. Volunteers greeted residents, offered personal care, and took time for friendly conversations. Additionally, the team worked to create a warm environment that highlighted respect and appreciation. As a result, the event helped senior veterans feel valued and recognized by their local community.

Heartwarming Music, Patriotism, and Veteran Appreciation

Live performances played a key role in setting a positive and patriotic atmosphere. The Newport News Church of God choir opened with The Star-Spangled Banner and Amazing Grace. Shortly after, a soloist performed Song for the Unsung Hero. In addition, piano and saxophone musicians played well-known patriotic songs such as My Country ’Tis of Thee, Stars and Stripes Forever, and America the Beautiful. These musical performances helped strengthen the overall message of veteran appreciation and community support.

The residents expressed their sincere gratitude for the personal care, attention, and conversations they received. Meanwhile, volunteers listened to their stories and experiences with respect. Consequently, several residents shared that the Veterans Day event reminded them that their military service continues to matter—not only to their families but also to their wider community.

Community Service and Ongoing Support & Appreciation for Senior Veterans

Volunteers wanted to highlight the importance of supporting veterans through practical help and consistent acts of kindness. Navy officer and church member Stefan Granner explained that the event showed how gratitude and service can strengthen community connections. The Church of God in Riverside, CA held a similar event where they provided free haircuts to their neighbors. Volunteers aim to continue to serve their community and share the love of a mother with all people. To see more volunteer events in Virginia, visit our Activities page!
