ASEZ volunteers partnered with Suffolk Parks & Recreation to plant 21 trees at Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk, Virginia. The event supported ASEZ’s Green Carbon Movement, a global initiative focused on ecosystem restoration and long-term sustainability. In short, it was a win for the park—and for the planet.
ODU Students, Faculty, and Community Leaders Join Forces
In total, 46 volunteers participated in the tree planting event. Many were members of the ASEZ club at Old Dominion University (ODU). Additionally, ODU professor Kathleen Larkin, along with other faculty members, joined the effort.
Together, volunteers planted trees, removed invasive weeds, and collected litter. As a result, Sleepy Hole Park became cleaner, greener, and healthier. More importantly, the project showcased the ODU community’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
ASEZ also welcomed Suffolk Mayor Michael Duman, who joined the volunteers to plant trees and share his appreciation for ASEZ’s partnership with the city:
“As Mayor of Suffolk, I wanted to be here to show appreciation from the City of Suffolk for all of the efforts ASEZ does. Your motto says it all: Save the Earth from A to Z. We’re happy to be a part of it. For us in the City of Suffolk, conservation is a top-of-mind subject. With our substantial growth, we always face the challenge of maintaining and protecting our environment and natural resources. ASEZ, you’ve been an instrumental part of that.”

This tree planting event in Suffolk, VA wasn’t just a feel-good day in the park (though it definitely was that, too). Every tree planted supports improved air quality, increased biodiversity, stronger community landscapes and a healthier park ecosystem for future visitors.

Pretty amazong to see these college kids put here making a difference. I know schedules in school are tough to manage so this really shows where their hearts are.

The youth are our future. Now adays, when it seems that things are so bleak, it is refreshing to see that there are many young men and ladies that care about their communities and their world. It was a lot of fun and heart warming to see many young adults from the Church of God and their classmates, friends and faculty come help support a local city in the Hampton Roads area. Really thankful for good teamwork to be done underneath the love of God.
