On July 7, 2024, 60 ASEZ WAO volunteers cleaned Pitchkettle Road in Suffolk, VA in partnership with the Suffolk Department of Public Works. The event began with a cheer to get volunteers excited. They shouted, “Save the Earth from A to Z, We Are One Family! ASEZ WAO, ASEZ WAO!” As soon as the cheer finished, rain began to pour down. However, this did not stop volunteers from accomplishing their mission. They immediately set out down the road to begin cleaning up the litter and debris. Volunteers successfully removed 46 bags of litter, 50 tires and 2 abandoned TVs.

The Value of Community Cleanups

Volunteers were joined by Wayne Jones, Coordinator for the Suffolk Department of Public Works. Wayne expressed the importance of these types of events. He shared, “These cleanups are vital. They help with the environment, obviously, because the trash eventually collects in the waterways and lots of it is plastic, which is really bad for the environment and the food that we eat, as well as the animals. Cleaning up is a really easy thing to do, and it can be a lot of fun, and it makes a big difference.”

Logan Stovall, an ASEZ WAO volunteer, explained the importance behind the cleanup. He said, “The reason why we’re out here doing this as a group and as a family is because we really want to improve the lives of the people living here in Suffolk. By cleaning up the trash, we are supporting the ASEZ WAO Green Earth Project’s mission to enhance local environments, reduce pollution, and promote a sustainable future for our community.”
