Sand fence restoration in Virginia Beach brought together ASEZ WAO volunteers and Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation on March 1, 2026. At Crab Creek, volunteers worked together to protect the shoreline, prevent erosion, and support the local coastal environment through hands-on service.

Sand Fence Restoration in Virginia Beach Strengthens Shoreline Protection

The project focused on rebuilding and strengthening sand fencing along the shoreline. In particular, sand fences help prevent erosion and support stable dune formation. As a result, these dunes protect coastal land, wildlife habitats, and nearby structures.

Volunteers installed new fencing materials and repaired damaged sections. In addition, they cleared debris from the surrounding area. Altogether, their work helped restore about 900 feet of sand fencing. Because of this effort, the strength and stability of the shoreline improved.

Sand fences play an important role in coastal protection. For example, they trap wind-blown sand and help dunes grow over time. Over time, strong dunes act as natural barriers against storms and rising tides. By restoring these fences, volunteers helped protect the Virginia Beach community for the future.

Community Effort Brings Meaningful Impact

A total of 97 volunteers joined the restoration project. From start to finish, each person worked with care, unity, and purpose. As a result, their teamwork showed a strong commitment to protecting the environment.

Virginia Beach City Councilman Joashua Schulman also joined the event. During the project, he shared his appreciation for the volunteers and their efforts. He stated, “It takes a village, and they brought a village with them.” His words highlighted the strong community spirit present that day.

ASEZ WAO volunteers carried out the project with joyful hearts. At the same time, they aimed to serve others and care for the environment. Through their actions, they showed that small efforts can create lasting change.
